Bill Butler sends open letter to private security industry

SIA chief executive Bill Butler has written an open letter to licence holders and others in the private security industry to ensure all are properly informed on the future on the SIA. The letter gives assurance that regulation of the private security industry will continue, with Government plans for a phased transition to a new regulatory regime.

The SIA is leading the industry to determine how the private security sectors in the UK will be regulated in the future, ensuring that this builds on the successes of SIA licensing and the Approved Contractor Scheme.

Ministers have said that there will be no major changes to SIA regulation or the Approved Contractor Scheme before the London Olympics 2012. Licence holders must understand that current law remains in place and it is a criminal offence for security operatives and those deploying them to work in licensable activities without a valid SIA licence. The SIA and its partners continue to ensure that the law is properly enforced.

Bill Butler said: “Some of you will be approaching the time to renew your SIA licence, or you may be considering applying for your first licence. I want to assure you that it is my intention to protect the investment you have made in training and your SIA licence. I do not want to see you lose out or be disadvantaged under a new system of regulation.

“As the new arrangements for regulation are developed, it is essential that we hear your views and understand your concerns. I want everyone who holds a licence to have the opportunity to share their opinions with us. When the time is right, I will seek your views through our many communication channels, but I urge you now to keep in touch with us. Staying informed means you can make the right decisions about your future.”

Changing the Guard at the NSI

Article Posted Dec 2010 by Infologue: www.infologue.com

As recently reported in the media, Jeff Little, OBE, MBA, has now taken on the role of CEO of the National Security Inspectorate (NSI) with effect from 1st December, following the retirement of his predecessor, Andrew White.

Following an intensive hand-over period, Jeff will be building on Andrew’s vision of a more streamlined and forward-thinking NSI organisation whilst dealing with the challenges that an ever-evolving security and fire industry will bring.

Commenting on his role and NSI’s future, Jeff said “I am immensely privileged to be taking on the role of Chief Executive of an organisation that has been carefully nurtured and managed through the recent difficult times for the industry and UK as a whole.

We are fortunate that NSI is in good shape, however, I have no doubt that many challenges lie ahead for the organisation as the economy emerges from recession.  I am looking forward to working with the dedicated staff of NSI, our approved companies and the many industry stakeholders with whom we interact.  I will do my upmost to ensure NSI’s mission of raising standards in the fire and security industry continues unabated, in a firm and fair manner, on behalf of the end user.

The industry is at a fascinating point in its evolution and new threats to personal and commercial security are constantly emerging, particularly in the electronic business space.  Technology will play an increasingly important part in everyone’s lives and the bundling together of capabilities will also affect the shape of the sector into the future.  The industry is one of the main reasons ‘why bad things don’t happen’ and should be proud of the part it plays in helping to secure the critical national infrastructure and ensure business continuity.  I look forward to being a part of these developments, adapting the Inspectorate to new trends as necessary, and ensuring that NSI is balanced and equipped to undertake these new and diverse challenges from an industry specific and technically knowledgeable baseline.”
